According
to our constitution, PCS Proud is an official PCS group set up to promote:
o Equal opportunities within the field of employment for lesbians,
gay men, bisexuals and transgender people within the civil service
and linked organisation.
o Equal opportunities within the PCS and within the wider trade union
and labour movement.
o Equal rights for lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and transgender people
within society in general.
o Oppose any organisation, individual(s) or forces in society which
seek to foster divisions based on sexuality, class, religion, gender,
disability, race, creed or HIV status.
o To work within the structure and 'umbrella' organization of the PCS.
o To act as a contact and support for lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and
transgender people who are members of the PCS.
o To offer solidarity and support to other groups in the lesbian and
gay community as approved by the AGM.
o To act as a social and cultural network for members.
All well and good, but how exactly do we go about achieving these not
inconsiderable aims?
Firstly,
our National Committee is made up of a number of officers
with differing roles and responsibilities. We have Regional
Reps whose role is to look after members interests on a local
level, inform employers and regional PCS offices on our issues and to
build links with local TUC groups and local lesbian, gay, bisexual and
transgender (LGBT) groups. They also aim to hold social events to allow
Proud members to meet one another.
A small group of officers have more specific duties... Obviously the
Chair of the group leads meetings and ensures good
organisation of the Committee. The Chair also works closely with the
group Secretary to liaise with other groups and bodies
who may require our help or need to be persuaded into positive action.
The role of Training Officer is vital to much of the
work we carry out, particularly the Proud training events which we run
a couple of times a year. So far, we have two packages available: the
'Stage 1' training which aims to help members come
out in the work place and deal with the resulting issues - especially
homophobia both within the workplace and in wider society. The response
from the members to this course has been tremendous.
A second course – Stage 2 - aims to help members
work within the the union to further LGBT issues. It provides guidance
on union structures, motion writing and public speaking.
We have also recently developed Women only training event based on the
other 2 successful and popular courses.
Along side the Training Officer is the Organiser who
ensures that all the background details are in place to enable us to
carry out our duties. Apart from training events, perhaps the Organiser's
most important duty is to facilitate the annual Proud Seminar.
This event gathers together around 100 Proud members and it is their
chance to meet the National Committee, hear speakers and discuss the
issues which affect them. There is also plenty of time for members to
meet and socialise. The Seminar is held in November every year.
The role of Editor is self explanatory. As well as
the Proud magazine, the Editor is in charge of the recently launched
'Special Issues' which will cover single issues such as 'Coming Out',
'Transgender' and 'Mental Health'.
Working along side the Editor, as part of the Editorial Board
is the latest addition to the National Committe, The Web Officer.
The Web Officer is responsible for maintaining and developing the website.
The Woman's Rep, The Black (BME) Rep,
The Disabled Member's Rep and the Trans Rep
and the Young Member's Rep evolved from what was originally
the Equality Officer. These roles are the National Committee's liaison
with other PCS Equality groups such as the Black, Women and Disabled
groups. The Equality Reps are responsible for keeping Proud up to date
with the latest developments within those groups and make useful contact
with such groups outside of the PCS.
Finally, the Membership Secretary and the Treasurer
have a more technical function, ensuring that moneys are available for
our work and making sure that membership lists are kept up to date and
new members are supplied with their Proud 'goodies'.
All - in - all we're a solid little team and work well together with
the Equality Department and Learning Services who supply endless encouragement
and support.
