October 2002
Dear Friends, Having recently been elected to the new position of PCS Proud Regional Representative for the East Midlands, I thought one of the first things I ought to do is to introduce myself to all of the members in this area. Well, I am new to Proud and having to learn much about the issues important to Lesbians, Gay Men and Bisexuals, not least the new legislation being introduced by the end of 2003. I have also been doing a lot of research into homophobia and heterosexism, and considering ways how we as a community can make a difference to society as a whole in accepting same sex relationships as being simply human sexual relationships. No mean task, I know. But now is the time. A few vital statistics about myself. I am 45 years old, and have been with my partner for 24 years. I work at the Land Registry in Leicester where I have been for the past 12 years. Interesting, eh? I have recently attended the Proud Advanced Training Course in Crouch End, London, where I met lots of great people. If you have never participated in a Proud event, then I would urge you to go! Don’t feel isolated. I guarantee you will make friends! On the same note, I hope we can have regular monthly meetings in the area. If you are interested in meeting Proud members in the East Midlands in a social setting, let me know – write, phone or email me with your suggestions, and I will try and arrange venues that are accessible to all. A few of us have arranged to meet this coming Wednesday at the Rainbow and Dove Northampton Square Leicester at 8.oopm. I am sorry to be announcing this so close to the date, but I have only just received the membership list for the East Midlands. I have attached a map – it’s only a couple of minutes from the railway station – so I do hope that some of you can make it! I also want to produce a regular newsletter for the area, so please send me any contributions, whether recommending bars in your area, reviewing books, films etc, or wanting to start a discussion on LGB issues. Remember we can influence Union policy, and therefore we should! Please also remember that the deadline for the Proud Seminar 2002, which takes place at Heathrow on November 15 – 17, is October 18! So get your application forms in to Brian! I look forward to meeting you all soon. Kind Regards Jude Jackson Full
membership of Proud is open to anyone who identifies as lesbian, gay or
bisexual. Associate membership is open to anyone else who supports our
aims and objectives. The cost is £5 per annum. You will receive
a regular magazine and occasional ‘special issues’ – recent examples of
which have been the Proud Members’ Questionnaire results and an issue
looking specifically at Transgender. Future special issues will look at
the issues of ‘Coming Out’ and ‘Mental health’. |
